Florida Eminent Domain Bill Passes in the House
In February, the Florida House passed a bill
to give the Florida School of the Deaf and the Blind the power of eminent
domain. This will allow the school the power to take private property from Florida
citizens if there is a “compelling reason.”
Supporters of the bill argue that because the
school is a state-run institution that educates students from every corner of
Florida, it should be an eminent domain authority.
Residents in the surrounding communities are
concerned about losing their property to the school because of the
wide-reaching effects of the bill. They have testified against it during the house
committee hearings. The historic neighborhoods that lie adjacent to the 80-acre
campus are in danger of being taken by the school.
Under Florida law, the government must
compensate you for condemning and taking your property under the power of eminent
domain. Our firm is dedicated to helping citizens like you fight these
condemnation proceedings, understand your property owners’ rights, and receive just
compensation for your property.
